Ford Model N

The Ford Model N was a four-cylinder car that was produced from 1906 to 1908. It cost $500 and had a wheelbase of 84 inches. It featured an internal expanding brake system and a two-speed planetary transmission. The car’s engine was mounted beneath the square hood, in front of the driver. It was equipped with gas headlights.

The Model N was equipped with plow share fenders and a step plate for access to the seat. It was similar to the Model T, but the Model N’s front axle is transverse rather than a swinging unit, and its front spring is transverse instead of horizontal. Its wheels measure 28×3 inches all around.

General Motors

General Motors is an American multinational automotive manufacturing company with its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. After World War II, GM faced severe competition from Japanese automakers. It responded by launching the Saturn division, which used highly automated plants to build subcompact cars to compete against imported Japanese cars. However, while these modernization efforts yielded some success, heavy losses in the early 1990s forced the company to shut down many plants and reduce its workforce by tens of thousands.

Chrysler

During World War II, Chrysler automobiles played an important role in advancing the nation’s defense. The company had accepted several defense contracts before entering the conflict, and by the time the war ended, the company had built over 25,000 Sherman tanks. This development fueled Chrysler’s development of advanced engineering and testing techniques, and contributed to the company’s rise to second place in U.S. sales in 1936.

During the 1970s, Chrysler had to contend with a number of problems, including higher oil prices and the rise of fuel-efficient Japanese vehicles. Additionally, consumers were less interested in muscle-laden cars and were more concerned with price and fuel efficiency. Moreover, the company had trouble developing a competitive, affordable compact car that could attract consumers. In this environment, Chrysler sought a new direction by hiring former Ford CEO Lee A. Iacocca to head the company’s board. Iacocca had served as Ford’s chief engineer during the 1960s, and was responsible for the sporty Mustang introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair.
